Rabbits can become a pest for a number of reasons. Rabbits dig holes and cause damage to grassed areas as well as damaging or killing plants and flowers by eating them.
A rabbit’s teeth never stop growing, therefore they have a constant need to gnaw to grind down their teeth using bulbs or flowers to do so.
Although many of us may keep domestic rabbits as pets and find it cruel to consider rabbits as a pest which needs culling, there is often a need to do so due to their damaging behaviour.
Rabbit control begins, as with all pest control, by assessing the infestation and considering the best option for treatment.
The most common technique for removing rabbits is by gassing the warren. To do this, we use pellets which let off gas when moistened by the soil. This highly poisonous gas (aluminium phosphide) kills the rabbits.
This treatment is not always suitable if there are young children or pets around so other methods such as snaring, or trapping may need to be considered.
It is never possible to 100% remove a rabbit infestation. Gassing for example is generally around 70% effective at reducing the rabbit population. Even if 100% of the rabbits were removed, there is a likelihood that other rabbits will occupy the warren and the population will increase again.
By reducing the population, we can reduce the amount damage they cause and slow the population re-growth.
