Grey squirrels (Sciurus carolinensis) are invasive pests and not native to the UK. They were first introduced to the UK in the 1870’s from North America.
Introductions of grey squirrels continued until the 1930’s, when it became illegal to release grey squirrels into the wild.
Grey squirrels are found in Hertfordshire and are well known as a destructive pest, frequently entering roof spaces. When they get inside a property they will chew woodwork, strip away insulation from electrical wiring, damage water pipes and contaminate water tanks with urine or droppings.

The first sign of a squirrel in your loft space would usually be noise. They are very loud, and you will usually hear squirrels before you see them or see signs of damage. They are most active in the very early hours before sunrise, so you may be woken by their banging or scratching sounds.

Squirrels are looking for a warm, safe place to nest and breed. Your loft provides everything they need. Your fluffy loft insulation provides the perfect material for bedding and they will pull it up to build their drey.
