Although considered a pest, bees are invaluable to the environment as they pollenate plants which provide a vital food source for humans. Their numbers have been declining in recent years, so it is important that they are respected and not treated as an ordinary pest.
The most common types of bee in the UK are the Bumble Bee and the Honey Bee although there are many other varieties.
Bumble Bees are large and hairy so generally easy to identify. The Honey Bee are smaller in size and often mistaken for wasps due to their similar size and colouring.
Bees nests are significantly different to wasps nests. Bumble Bees tend to build their nests with leaves, grass, bark and wax in places close to the ground like under decking or in flowerpots.
Honey Bees build nests similar to those of wasps but usually in exposed places such as under roof soffits r in hollowed out trees. The nests have a hexagonal shaped cell structure.
Mining Bees often nest underground in mounds. You may spot them coming out of the ground from mounds similar to an ants nest.

Do not get too close to the nest and do not try to remove it yourself. Bees can become aggressive and sting if they feel threatened.
