Hornets are one of the most feared of the stinging insects as they are large and have the most painful sting. European hornets can grow up to 4cm long and are the most common type of hornet in the UK. Although larger, research shows that hornets are much less aggressive than wasps and therefore less likely to sting.
Hornets are usually quite easy to distinguish from wasps. They are much larger and much louder than wasps and they also differ slightly in colour. Wasps are yellow and black whereas hornets tend to be dark brown and yellow.
If you frequently find hornets in your house or garden it is likely that there is a nest nearby. It is important to try to locate the nest before contacting pest control. We cannot treat a nest that is not on your own property. Do not approach a nest as this could cause the hornets to feel threatened and attack you.
Usually, we will use an insecticide which we apply close to the entrance of the nest. Over a few days, the hornets will carry the chemicals into the nest which will eliminate the colony. We will need to return a few days later to check it and remove the nest.
