About Beetle's

There are over 300,000 different species of beetle which is more varieties than any other insect. Many of these are harmless and not considered to be pests.

Those which infest your home and cause damage to your property are considered to be pests and will need professional pest control to remove them.

Types of Beetle

The most common types of beetle infestations are:

Carpet Beetle

Carpet beetles are around 2 – 4mm long so they can be difficult to spot especially as they may blend in with your carpet. They are brown and black in colour with white or yellowish markings.

Carpet beetles will live in your carpets, hence the name, but as adults they will also live outside. Carpet beetles do damage to the carpet during the larvae stage when they burrow into the carpet to lay their eggs.

Removal of carpet beetles is not always easy and may result in the removal of carpets.

The Larder Beetle

The larder beetle is slightly larger than the carpet beetle at around 9-10mm in length so they are easier to spot. They are dark brown in colour and have distinctive markings in the form of black dots near their head.

Larder beetles, as the name would suggest, infest your food. They tend to infest meat such as bacon, ham or dried beef however they prefer spoiled meat.

Larder beetles do not lay their eggs in food, they prefer a firmer surface such as wood and will often seek cracks between door frames or skirting boards.

Treatment for larder beetles is usually chemical based spraying to kill the pupae and adult beetles.

Wood Boring Beetles

Wood boring beetles, or woodworm as they are more commonly known. This is because at the larvae stage of their development, they look like worms and this is when they cause damage to wood by boring into it.
